My name is Ekaterina Nugmanova, and I am 28 years of age. Currently, I reside in the Novgorod region, in the city that is my home. Previously, my worldview was shaped by a certain set of expectations regarding the ideal life trajectory for a young woman in Russia. The prevailing narrative suggested that young ladies should strive to depart from their parents’ homes as soon as feasible, complete their secondary education, pursue a college degree, embark on a path of marriage and parenthood, securing employment and achieving financial independence before the age of thirty, aiming to pay off their mortgages within three decades. However, even as I navigated through these years, a sense of dissonance began to surface.
A subtle unease crept into my consciousness, accompanied by the realization that the prescribed path was not entirely harmonious. Like a persistent worm, a seed of doubt began to fester within me, ultimately leading me to acknowledge that it was impractical to assume sole responsibility for raising children effectively and with integrity, especially in the absence of support from others.
I wondered why I needed a «white salary» when people had been contributing part of their earnings to the pension fund all their lives and were now living in poverty as a result. Why, by paying such large taxes, did I, as a citizen of the Russian Federation, have access to low-quality medicine under a state policy? As a mother, I was paying another tax, and now as a writer I wonder why public schools have low-quality education and most schools need major repairs. If you look at the experience of our parents and grandparents, their parenting examples were very bad. The experience of interaction within families was toxic, abusive, domestically violent, and humiliating to the human person. It’s just psychopaths raising neurotics, and there’s dirt and filth everywhere.
All I have is myself, my knowledge, intuition and a savvy mind. I no longer rely on the state, my family, or even my husband’s family. My companions are Magic and Money. This is what will help and protect me. Friends will leave, men are unreliable in the Russian Federation, as are their families, and savings in the bank may become worthless during the next economic crisis, and our beloved state may cease to exist in the form we are accustomed to. Magic is another matter. Magic won’t betray you or sell you for a dime, unlike humans.
You don’t have to believe me, don’t read my stories. I also didn’t believe in God, the Devil, or anything supernatural. I’m not imposing myself on you, you have every right not to believe me. I’ve also been an atheist for a long time, and my only faith was self-belief. Being someone and becoming someone are different things. I was a little fragile girl with psychological problems who had been used and humiliated all her life by those she loved. I’m a witch now, and I have a right to a lot of things in this world.
Of course, you won’t believe in the supernatural until it kicks your front door open. The main thing is that this is not the last thing you have seen in your life.
